Fears Over Damage to Syrian Dam as Battle for Raqqa Intensifies

There are conflicting reports about the damage caused to a dam on the Euphrates River close to the Syrian city of Raqqa. Local villagers say Islamic State militants have threatened to destroy the Tabqa dam – a key staging post on the route to the terror group’s de facto capital. As Henry Ridgwell reports, that would put thousands of lives at risk in towns and villages downstream.
